此顶注通常在读者打错条目标题，且错误明显、无须解释的情况下才能使用。比如，考虑有读者希望查找香港艺人李克勤，却不小心降落在了现任中国国务院总理李克强：

我们可以假设读者在看到“李克勤”的时候能马上知道他要什么，且此案通常无需进行过多解释。

需要注意的是，{{tlx|distinguish}}不应用于在不解释清楚时区别就不明显的情况下，假设有读者在寻找命名为Reversi的游戏:

在上述例子中，仅仅提示Reversis和Reversi不同，难以帮助读者区分，因为两者都是游戏。
